What – you were expecting an Apis, perhaps?
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol… You shall not worship them or serve them.” Exodus 20:3-5
In the chapter on the Second Word, the group in the coffee shop spend time discussing what exactly constitutes an “idol”, and then begin to ask what the major “American Idols” are. Someone suggests the economy – instead of a golden calf, we have the iconic bronze bull on Wall Street pictured above. If an idol represents a source of power beyond ourselves that we look to when we’re afraid, or in pain, or insecure, and to which we’re willing to make great sacrifices in order to ensure its continued blessing (or, at least, diversion from our pain), then perhaps “The Economy” is a strong candidate for the American Idol.
As one character muses, “…part of the attraction of an idol is that we know they are not God. So we come up with something we are willing to give ourselves to as a means to deal with the pain, insecurity and fear that we live with, but which we think we can still control.” Whether that be alcohol, or drugs, or relationships, or sex, or a career, or a family, or [fill in yours here]. “We think they serve us, but eventually we end up serving them.”
So, what songs come to mind that tap into this understanding of what constitutes an idol? For the book, I chose a lyric from “Medicine Show” by Big Audio Dynamite:
“When all around you seems like hell, just one sip can make you well.”

Head Like a Hole – Nine Inch Nails
God money I’ll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don’t want everything he wants it all.
no you can’t take it
no you can’t take it
no you can’t take that away from me
no you can’t take it
no you can’t take it
no you can’t take that away from me
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.
head like a hole.
black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.
bow down before the one you serve.
you’re going to get what you deserve.
bow down before the one you serve.
you’re going to get what you deserve.
God money’s not looking for the cure.
God money’s not concerned with the sick amongst the pure.
God money let’s go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money’s not one to choose
I thought of a couple of things that I think Americans idolize:
#1 Freedom – This is something that so many Americans focus on but are mistaken as to what it really means. The focus is on ourselves and how we feel. We use it as an arguement to get what we want so we can feed and comfort our flesh and feel good about ourselves when unkowingly we are really nurturing and protecting our slavery to something (convenience, addiction, laziness…). The song I would choose for this one is “Feeling Good” by Michael Bublè.
#2 American Pride – Many still look to either the reputation or the history of the formation of our country as comfort and security. Hey, we’re the greatest nation on earth, right? We focus on the “can do” spirit that supposedly built our nation and leave God’s sovereign hand out of it… the idea of working hard, the American dream of having it all… The song I would choose for this one is either Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way” or “I Want it All” by Queen.
Keith Urban’s You’re Not My God
It’s just a piece of paper, it says, “In God We Trust”
A little sure felt good
But a lot was not enough
And everybody loved me when I was on a roll
And I thought I had everything
When I held the gold
But you’re not my god
And you’re not my friend
You’re not the one that I will walk with in the end
You’re not the truth
You’re a temporary shot
You ruin people’s lives and you don’t give a second thought
You’re not my god
Little white lines on a mirror
Cut neatly in a roll
Medicine that kept me from lookin’ in my soul
I thought you were the answer
To all of my despair
And you almost had me six feet down
But I’m still breathin’ air
‘Cause you’re not my god
And you’re not my friend
You’re not the one that I will walk with in the end
You’re not the truth
You’re a temporary shot
You ruin people’s lives and you don’t give a second thought
You’re not my god
From the cradle to the grave
Temptations all around
But no matter how good the fix
It’s gonna take you down
Now some call it a weakness
Some call it a sin
But it’s all the same behind each game
I see your evil grin
